Leanne Pooley is one of New Zealand’s most accomplished filmmakers having directed over 20 films. She has won numerous other awards all over the world including the Audience Award for documentary at the Toronto International Film Festival for her film TOPP TWINS- UNTOUCHABLE GIRLS. Why do documentaries matter?

Like all art forms the documentary can, when done well, enlighten, inform and most importantly inspire. Perhaps uniquely documentary fills a space where issues are explored and sometimes, change can be achieved.

Why do you make documentaries?

I love the opportunity documentary gives me to enter new worlds. From the land of contemporary art, to the politics of Zimbabwe my films have allowed me to develop an understanding of things, people and places I would otherwise have been ignorant of. The fact that I get to share this gift of access, is an added bonus.

What makes a good documentary?

The same thing that makes a good fiction film, a strong story with a narrative that includes interesting characters, plot, thematic opportunities and maybe, a little truth.

What documentaries have inspired you the most?

There are so many wonderful films that have inspired, infuriated, educated, challenged and inspired me I couldn't begin to list them here.
